The poultry may range freely in the household compound and find much of their own food, getting supplementary amounts from the householder. Participants at a 1989 workshop in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, defined rural poultry as a flock of less than 100 birds, of unimproved or improved breed, raised in either extensive or intensive farming systems. Labour is not salaried, but drawn from the family household (Sonaiya 1990b). Family poultry was additionally clarified as “small flocks managed by individual farm families in order to obtain food security, income and gainful employment for women and children” (Branckaert, as cited in Sonaiya, 1990c). Cashew farmers expect early harvest, increase in production

The National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN) has projected a 10 per cent increase in cashew nut production for 2018. It said this would bring the total value of nuts to 185 tons, up from its 2017 level of 175 tons. The national publicity secretary of the association, Mr Sotonye Anga, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. Anga said the expectations were because thousands of new cashew trees at their 17th week were already flowering in preparation to fruit. Nigeria commences training of bee farmers

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) have commenced quality guideline training of bee farmers across the country. Dr Gideon Mshelbwala, the Director, Veterinary and Pest Control Services in the ministry, made the statement in Goshen, Nasarawa State. He said the training was aimed at enabling Nigeria meet European Union requirements for export of honey. He added that the training would also help to build the capacity of bee farmers on modern bee keeping practices for them to comply with international standards in honey production. The director said that the Federal Government was supporting bee farmers with inputs like bee hives and protective clothing and gloves to enable them boost production. “ Nigeria is ready to host the Africa Apiculture Expo in 2018 and we have paid the 50,000 dollars bidding fee.Bee farmers are ready for the programme and that is why we are training them ,’’ Mshelbwala said.
