Nigeria commences training of bee farmers

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) have commenced quality guideline training of bee farmers across the country. Dr Gideon Mshelbwala, the Director, Veterinary and Pest Control Services in the ministry, made the statement in Goshen, Nasarawa State. He said the training was aimed at enabling Nigeria meet European Union requirements for export of honey. He added that the training would also help to build the capacity of bee farmers on modern bee keeping practices for them to comply with international standards in honey production. The director said that the Federal Government was supporting bee farmers with inputs like bee hives and protective clothing and gloves to enable them boost production. “ Nigeria is ready to host the Africa Apiculture Expo in 2018 and we have paid the 50,000 dollars bidding fee.Bee farmers are ready for the programme and that is why we are training them ,’’ Mshelbwala said. How to know if an egg is fertile or infertile before incubation.

Not sure whether your eggs are fertile? There are a couple of different methods you can use to see if there’s potential life inside an egg, or whether it’s simply a yellow yolk that won’t develop further. By opening the egg If you crack it open, a fertile egg can be identified by a small white circle on the yolk, that has a ‘bullseye’ like shape – i.e. one small white circle, with another white ring on the outside of it. This is created by a cluster of cells that, if incubated, will hopefully develop into a baby chick. By candling If you’re looking to incubate your eggs, then the only way to tell if the egg is fertile is by incubating it for a few days, and then candling the egg to see its progress. This involves going into a dark room, and shining a bright light underneath the large end of the egg.
